In this blog post, we will be taking a closer look at an impressive model of a British Rail Class 09 shunter built by an engineer over the past decade. This project was undertaken in the engineer’s spare time and serves as a testament to their dedication and passion for engineering.
The Project’s Journey: From Concept to Completion
The journey of this model began when the engineer was just 11 years old. They started by developing CAD drawings, which they taught themselves how to create. However, as they scaled up the initial plans, they realized that the original designs lacked sufficient detail. To overcome this challenge, the engineer turned to detailed photographs and measurements taken from the full-size locomotive at the Bluebell Railway.
Crafting the Model: From Concept to Reality
The model is primarily constructed of steel, with its frames fabricated from 12mm thick steel. The locomotive’s intricate details are captured through a combination of CAD designs and the meticulous measurements taken from the full-size locomotive.
Powering the Model: Three Electric Motors
The model is powered by three 750-watt electric motors, which are down-geared to provide high torque and drive the axles directly. These motors draw power from a 24v 280 amp-hour lithium iron phosphate battery. A separate 12v system is dedicated to the sound system, featuring authentic audio recordings from the full-size locomotive, and the vacuum brakes.
Radio Control: A Key Feature of the Model
The model operates via radio control, enabling the engineer to take it for a spin around the tracks. The locomotive is also equipped with a driving truck modelled on a GWR Loriot M Wagon, spanning approximately 3m in length.
A Successful Project: Ingfield Light Railway
The model now resides at Ingfield Light Railway in Sussex, where it supports the Ingfield Manor School for children with Cerebral Palsy. This successful collaboration demonstrates how a passion for engineering can positively impact the lives of others.
In conclusion, the engineer’s decade-long journey to create this detailed and accurate model of a British Rail Class 09 shunter serves as an inspiration for aspiring engineers and hobbyists alike. The project’s technical aspects have been discussed in detail while keeping it engaging for readers interested in engineering and maker projects.
